Sonic Drive-In’s roots lie at Cottage Cafe, a small eatery within Shawnee, Oklahoma. Troy N. Smith, Sr. purchased it and transformed it into a fast-food restaurant called Troy’s Pan Full of Chicken. He also purchased Top Hat, a root beer stand that was later renamed Sonic in 1959, since the name was already trademarked.
