History:
The restaurant was originally a family-owned business in a rural Wisconsin small town. Craig and Lea Culver along with Craig’s parents George, and Ruth, opened the first restaurant at their Sauk City home on July 18, 1984. George Culver, the grandson and son of a Wisconsin farmer was a cheesemaker. George and Ruth Culver bought their first restaurant in 1964. Together with their children, they made a formidable team. They grew up working in the restaurant. They gained a lot of knowledge about hospitality and how to cook delicious meals. This model was used to open many other successful restaurants.
Craig Culver was the one who came up with an idea for a restaurant in 1981. He combined the homemade hamburgers of his mother with his favorite childhood dessert, fresh frozen curd. Culver’s Butterburgers and Fresh Frozen Custard were born from this combination. In 1984, Sauk City opened the first store. Baraboo in Wisconsin became the first successful franchise. In Buffalo, Minnesota, opened the first restaurant outside Wisconsin. Culver Franchising System, Inc., which is a privately-owned company, manages the restaurant. It was founded in 1987 in Prairie du Sac, Wisconsin.
